The LEGO® history

The LEGO® story begins in the 1930s in a small workshop in Billund, Denmark. To support his family during the economic crisis, carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen made wooden toys here - such as a wooden duck and the first building bricks in the form of simple wooden blocks. In 1934, he invented the name LEGO® for his small toy company, made up of “leg godt”, Danish for “play well”.

The introduction of the first plastic bricks in 1949 and the revolutionary stud and tube system in 1958 were the milestones that eventually led to the LEGO® bricks as we know them today and which were to change the world of toys forever.

Today, still family-owned, the LEGO® Group combines tradition and innovation and inspires people all over the world.

Team Lange and their passion for LEGO®

Based in Eschede, Lower Saxony, Team Lange, who designed the exhibition in Eberbach Monastery, consists of the couple Christian and Andrea (left), nephew Johannes, his wife Tanja (right) and friend Dierk Reinke (center). They all share a deep passion for the iconic LEGO® bricks.

Today, the family's collection comprises over 5,414 models with a total of 2,260,494 individual parts from 1955 to the present day and is one of the largest private collections in Germany.

Since 2003, “Team Lange” has organized a total of 19 exhibitions - so the 20th show in Eberbach Monastery is an anniversary of sorts.

It shows an impressive variety of LEGO® models from different themes. Among the outstanding exhibits are the detailed Star Wars™ film scenes and the twelve-meter-long LEGO® City scene. The Friends scene and the mosaics are also particularly worth seeing.

With their passion and commitment, the Langes are helping to keep the fascination for LEGO® bricks alive for generations to come.

The team's concept is spectacularly complemented by a 5x5 meter monastery model by the chairman of the LEGO® Modellbaufans Rheinland e.V., Jörg Brormann (on the left in the photo with foundation director Julius Wagner on the right), which is set up in the Monks' Dormitory of the former Cistercian abbey.
